(2018+) The History of The Online Shifter Community

A New Beginning

After the confusion of the 2010s, the shifter community and the therian community would split once more, possibly for good. 

Therians (or those who didn't feel they could p-shift) and otherkin would move to websites that didn't focus on physical transformation, instead devoting their time to more mundane ways of becoming nonhuman. [1] The idea of transforming organically had been largely phased out of the culture, with most refusing to entertain the idea except as a fictional concept.

Shyer than therians, many shifters would be reluctant to move to social media but soon embrace the change as they found more functional platforms. Tumblr, Instagram and Amino would become crucial avenues for supernaturals to talk and connect with each other. As many supernaturals began to meet up with each other, conflict would result as different groups had different ideas of what should be possible with shifting.

As a new decade rose, new conflicts and challenges would plague the community.

Tumblr

Tumblr is a microblogging platform that was created in 2007 as a way to share posts and media with others. Upon making an account, users can make a variety of posts and then by tagging those posts with keywords, allow others interested in those topics to see them.

In the spring of 2015 a blog called Wereformation would start up on this site. [2] This blogger intended to inform others about werewolves, shifters, and other nonhuman and supernatural beings. Now physical shifters and the supernaturally-focused had always existed on tumblr on isolated blogs, but Wereformation would be the first to kick off what would be a shifter renaissance on Tumblr. [3][4] She would begin to post about being a shifter, tagging some of her posts to the otherkin tag.[5] Her posts on shifting would make waves on kin tumblr, attracting the attention of those looking to demand proof of her abilities. [6] This would create a point of conflict between shifters and kin, and kin bloggers would regularly reblog her posts, mocking and harassing them. [7][8] Wereformation would be bullied off the platform for a short period of time, but would soon comeback in the form of unnxturxl, a shifter blog focusing on the supernatural. [9]

Not long after, a shifter called Silvër (no relation to the aforementioned Silverblack of Silver Pack) would make a blog of her own, encouraging other shifters to come out. [10] This too was not received well by otherkin tumblr, and she was also promptly harassed. [11] She would delete her blog but soon remade as theshapeshiftersof, an information and content blog for shifters. [12] From there she would post information about werewolves and other shifters. [13] An influx of shifters would soon appear, many claiming to be lycan as well, and also posting information not unlike Silvër's. [14][15] It would soon become clear that these were her packmates. [16] Silvër was the leader of The Moon Shifters Pack, a pack that had been passed down to her from the previous alpha. [17] With Silvër in charge it would soon be renamed to The First Family. [18] The First Family would claim to have three-thousand members, including otherkin, and would soon pop up over various social media sites. [19]

Silvër would explain the ins and outs of shifting to the community. She was a jãeger lycanthrope, since werewolves could not control when they shifted and were at the mercy of the moon. [20] Many of her packmates were also lycans like her, the same breed she was. [21] [22] [23] Many of them learned about their breeds from Silvër, who claimed she got them from a lycan who now lived off the grid. [24] She would come to understand she was a shifter after repeated incidents where she woke up outside, with blood on her clothes, and as a result felt that it was important to help others in her situation. [25] She often argued that lycans and shifters were otherkin (but not therians), on account of them identifying as nonhuman. [26] When asked why she didn't prove her claims to the community, she pointed out that her wolf side would get aggressive and attack the camera, preventing safe documentation of any shifts. [27]Many otherkin would express concern and skepticism with what Silvër was saying, but they would not be able to stop the wave of shifters now descending upon the site. [28][29]

Avians would also appear on Tumblr around this time. [30] Project Icarus, wingedhumanoid, and others would begin to post on tumblr, to the dismay of the otherkin around. [31][32] Many tried reblogging and arguing with them and the shifters, but had limited success in changing their views, if at all. [33][34] Callouts would be made, especially on Silvër: otherkin would take issue with her claim of changing forms, and plural systems would take issue with her claims of blacking out. [35] One system in particular, Panopticon, would use this opportunity to call out someone else they claimed was a shifter and bolster their standing in the community by creating an alterhuman abuse support blog. [36][37][38] Panopticon would later be revealed to be the head of the Galifreyan Traditionalist Society, a dangerous and manipulative cult. [39][40]

While Wereformation/unnxturxl and many of the avian blogs would simmer out as the hate proved to be too much, theshapeshiftersof blog would continue on for some time, boosting her newly created posts and Shifter Saturday events with tags like #proudphysicalshifter, and ignoring the pleas of the otherkin who wanted her to stop. [41] [42] While otherkin would soon learn to block any p-shifter content they did not want to see, the wider shifter community would soon grow upset with the information theshapeshiftersof was posting, and fights would soon break out between her and other members on Amino and Instagram.

Instagram

Instagram is an app centered around photo-sharing. Members post pictures and can tag them, enabling a larger audience to find their content. Instagram was a popular place for shifters and other supernaturals looking to safely blog about their experiences. Unlike Tumblr, Instagram made it easy to lock your account while still finding other shifters, making it easy to connect with others without gaining derision.

Here a relatively active shifter community would form, also spearheaded by Silvër. Silvër would run an official pack Instagram to recruit members to her pack Discord as well as disseminate the same information from Tumblr. [43] Many individuals would join her and claim to be a part of her pack, and information on how their breeds and shifting worked filled the tags around this time. [44][45][46]

While mermaids and avians would also form a presence on the site, they often paled in comparison to the numerous werewolves there. [47][48] Silvër attracted a lot of attention from both shifters and non-shifters here, and many therians and otherkin would investigate what she was saying, often deeming her claims false but still following the account out of interest. 

Amino

After the fall of experience project, most shifters took up residence on Similar Worlds, a site with a similar goal to Experience Project. Unlike Experience Project, the groups on Similar Worlds were highly visible to other members and the I am a Real Werewolf group was prone to trolls and inappropriate material.[49] After a few months of struggling on this new platform, the members would move to Amino. [50][51]

Amino is a social media app that was created in 2012. The app is centered around communities, closed-off groups where members are free to indulge their interests. Members of communities can write posts, make polls, chat live with others within the communities and post pictures.

This setup was perfect for the Experience Project refugees, and many would move to the app after hearing about it from younger members of the community. [52] They would encounter an already-present supernatural community consisting of mermaids, avians and other shifters, and soon find themselves butting heads with the members there.

Similar to the atmosphere on 43Things, many people wanted to become nonhuman, often forming groups dedicated to this goal and using subliminals to help. [53] Subliminals, short for subliminal messages, are hidden audio messages that are thought to change how the conscious mind functions. While some believe that subliminals only affect the mind, others believe they can alter their physical bodies too. Many who weren't naturally supernatural or nonhuman would claim to have been changed (or in the process of changing) through subliminals, sometimes touting subliminals as the solution to all sorts of medical and social issues. [54] This would lead to conflict between those who were born and those who were changed. The born didn't believe the changed were legitimate and felt that the messages they were spreading were dangerous, while those trying to change felt that the born were crushing their dreams, with the changed often disagreeing with the info born shifters espoused and supporting those trying to change.

Silvër and her pack would set up several communities here, often referencing lycans or shapeshifters. The Lycan's Den, Otherkin Kingdom and The Shapeshifters of Amino served as hubs for her growing audience, and shifters as well as humans would post within them. [55][56][57]Interestingly enough most would claim to be jaegers or some variety of "normal" animal-adjacent shifter; few, if any, claimed to be more unusual breeds such as bloodchasers or skykeepers. [58][59] Silvër would initially entertain the thought of magic turning others, offering a spell or two to members in other communities to try.[60] One member would log his attempts with the spell (Figure 1), documenting psychological and spiritual effects for months but not much more. [61]

At this point Silvër's influence was growing, and even seemingly isolated communities off of amino would have members who had heard of her. [62][63] Some communities seemed to take her claims with a grain of salt, not fully believing in them but entertaining the concept. [64] [65] Others immediately dismissed her as a roleplayer or mentally ill, and steered away from her groups. [66] [67] Former members from her groups would begin to speak up about Silvër's behavior, discussing how the group's hostility towards non-shifters (or lack of support for their species dysphoria) negatively impacted their mental health. [68] [69] Shifters who opposed her group would create guides and other informative posts to educate the newbies of the community, decrying her information as misinformation.[70][71]

This critique (as well as the large number of accounts she was controlling across different platforms) may have led Silvër and her packmates to delete many of the communities they ran on Amino, focusing themselves on Tumblr and Instagram. Many of her former pack members would still identify as kin or werewolves; in order to avoid further trauma from the pack they would go on to form werewolfkin communities that strictly forbade any p-shifter talk or discussion. [72] [73]

Culture Clash

Several active shifter communities existed by the time the Experience Project shifters arrived, but by far the most notable were werewolf-community, ShiftersUnite, Mermaid Shifters, Project-Icarus, Alation and Shifters and Supernaturals. [74][75][76][77][78][79] Werewolf-community had a steady but active userbase, while Mermaid Shifters, Alation and Project-Icarus were newer and less purveyed.ShiftersUnite was the place most serious shifters went after Werewolf-community, and Shifters and Supernaturals was just in its early days. Each community had a different vibe and a different userbase; the members of ShiftersUnite were more focused around real-life animal shifters and werewolves, while werewolf-community accommodated both physical werewolves and supernatural otherkin.

A shifter from Experience Project and the newly created SimilarWorlds going by the name of SheAngel19 would make waves on Amino when she began to confront some of the claims made by subliminal users, as well as those claiming to be avians, mermaids and other non-documented supernaturals. Feeling her way around the app, she would eventually end up at ShiftersUnite, finding a group of other shifters wanting information from older, more experienced members. [80] She would soon gain a supportive following, although her mythbusting would be localized to Werewolf-shifters, an abandoned group with a few non-documented supernatural and subliminal users. [81] Here she fought with a few members over their claims of being faeries from the cartoon series Winx, leading to a lot of drama within the group. [82] Amino would take note of the large amount of activity, and give the group to the most active users there - SheAngel19, Kaeyanna and Akeye, a person claiming to be a Winx fairy. [83] As expected, Akeye's reign would not last long since she would be removed from admin status before she could do anything, leaving the group to SheAngel19. The old leader, Lily, would return soon after this, but would be outvoted in a poll to take back leadership. [84] Now in charge, SheAngel19 would soon clean out many of the subliminal users and sketchy individuals, making the group safe for members of Experience Project to inhabit. [85][86]

Supernaturals and Shifters was just gaining its footing around this time, with a rapidly increasing member base of weres, mermaids, avians and spiritual nonhumans. [87] Ophelia, the leader of this community, was welcoming towards all types of supernaturals and felt that other supernatural types - such as mermaids and avians - were as valid as animal shifters.[88] Some members would disagree with this, but for the most part everyone appeared to be comfortable with this arrangement. Despite the overly accepting atmosphere, SheAngel19 would also interact here from time to time, even suffering minor disciplinary actions with no hard feelings. [89] Members generally got along well as long as everyone and their beliefs were respected. 

One day a member would take issue with SheAngel19's disbelief of mermaids. A short debate would ensue before SheAngel19 was banned by Ophelia. SheAngel19 felt she was wrongly banned, while Ophelia felt the ban was justified.[90][91][92] This would mark the beginning of a toxic rivalry between Werewolf-shifters and Supernaturals and Shifters that would last several months, with members from both groups spying on each other and trolling the other group from time to time.[93][94] Insults would be hurled, and paranoia reigned supreme as staff struggled to figure out who was friend and who was foe. [95] The stress from this would lead many mods from Supernaturals and Shifters to resign, with members from Werewolf-shifters slowly replacing the mod team as the conflict simmered down and staff left. [96][97][98]

Smaller conflicts would also occur around this time between Werewolf-Shifters and Alation and Mermaid Shifters, as well as the distant Therian and Otherkin-Fictionkin aminos. [99] [100] Therian amino would raid Werewolf-shifters and try to troll the members, while a werewolfkin would stumble into Werewolf-shifters and, upon realizing that it was a physical shifter amino, would run to the Otherkin-Fictionkin amino and vent about their time there. Werewolf-shifters would try to be diplomatic about these, and the groups would soon learn to respect each other's boundaries. 

Members and staff of Werewolf-shifters would also begin to call out Silvër, who had become quite infamous across the otherkin, therian and shifter communities. Old members of her pack had written about their time in the pack and how stressful it was, debunking Silvër's claim that her pack was 3000 strong or welcoming to non-shifters (Figure 2). [101] Shifters would point out the impossibility of the breeds and the danger of her some of her claims, like the idea that blackouts were signs of shifting. [102] Others noted the toxic elements in her pack, with hostility and anger often aimed at shifting disbelievers or any sort of valid criticism.

At the time SheAngel19 and Silvër were both active on YouTube, a video sharing website. [103] [104] SheAngel19 would begin to vague about Silvër in videos, debunking the breeds and claims Silvër had made. In response Silvër would make a few videos addressing the controversy. She would reiterate earlier statements about her information coming from lycans living "off-the-grid", and vent about people not speaking to her directly about these accusations. SheAngel19 would fire back again in another vague. This would result in members going back and forth between the groups spilling information about what they had learned and how the other was doing.

Eventually it would be revealed that the breeds Silvër often espoused were taken from someone else's creative writing piece, solidifying what many already suspected about Silvër. [105] [106] [107] Thoroughly debunked, Werewolf-shifters (as well as the rest of the supernatural community) lost interest in her and would begin to focus on their own internal affairs.

Silvër would try to bounce back from these accusations, but at this point everyone in the community was aware of her, and anytime she would try to step foot in a community (whether otherkin or shifter) she would be met with hostility and call-outs. [108][109] Eventually she would delete her accounts on Instagram, Amino, and Tumblr, giving up most forms of social media and eventually passing the pack onto another member. [110][111] At this point, Werewolf-shifters and Shifters and Supernaturals would be under full control of SheAngel19 and the rest of her team. [112][113] Ophelia left to create and moderate new groups, and then would leave Amino entirely. [114][115]

Amino would soon degrade substantially, causing many long time members - both shifters and non-shifters - to leave. Around the middle and end of 2019, reality shifting would become more widely known online, and a community would start to develop around the concept of shifting their reality to another universe. [116] Reality shifters would flood the app, getting confused with the physical shifters there and entering their groups as a result. [117] Some shifters (both on amino and off) would leave for the reality shifting community, while others would experiment but find the practice unhelpful. Most shifters that were not interested in reality shifting fell off the app, as the app itself would fall into disarray, full of bugs and ads. The ones that stayed formed new groups independent of SheAngel19's reign, and eventually most of the communities would fall inactive. [118][119] Shifters on these platforms then moved to Tumblr and Discord, searching for others like them and once again continuing the cycle.

Eventually amino would become a shell of it's former self. Bugs were common there, and ads overran the app. [120] Lag would also be a significant issue, as many posts failed to load or would stop posting entirely. [121] The shifter community hung on for a great while there, but eventually the platform would go offline around December 12th, 2025, leaving the few shifters still there without a home to call their own. [122] Those who foresaw its deletion moved to Tumblr and Discord, while the others were lost to time.
